I attended a lecture from Green Party County Councillor Emma Garnett at the University of Oxford. Emma shed light on how we can tackle poverty and inequality so everyone has the freedom to access healthy and sustainable diets, housing and transport options. Emma emphasized the importance of tackling inequality for behavioural change for Net Zero. She highlighted 6 key problems of inequality, one key statistic that resonated with me was ‘10% of the richest population are responsible for 50% of carbon emissions’.
Emma drew focus to what we as a society can do to minimize the inequality, key things being voting for politicians and parties with policies to reduce inequality, signing petitions, sharing sustainable living with your networks, donating to a community organization and advocacy on social media.
I’d highly recommend attending one of Emma’s presentations, as she specializes in sustainability and behaviour change.
