The more candidates we stand at the election, the more seriously we’re taken by the public and the media.
Standing as a Paper Candidate gives credibility to our existing councillors, and helps building a vote base for wins in the future. It also gives us an idea of the ‘base vote’ in an area, and gives us access to important information about voters there.
We have more than 30 wards, in Cherwell and West Oxfordshire, where elections are taking place in 2026. We need candidates either paper or target for each and every one of them.
What is a ‘Paper’ or ‘non-target’ candidate?
A paper candidate is someone who stands for election for the Greens in an area where we feel confident that there’s no chance of us winning because we are not campaigning. We have to target our comparatively limited resources well, so in these wards or divisions we choose not to campaign.
A non-target candidate is also known as a ‘paper candidate’ because they are a candidate on paper only; not campaigning to win. Paper candidates do not usually leaflet or canvass, nor are they expected to deal with the media. Often they are busy helping our campaigns in Target wards.
Usually there’s no realistic chance of a paper candidate getting elected, but having someone on the ballot paper has a number of benefits:
Your name will be on the ballot paper but there will be no specific campaign to promote you in the District Ward or County Division that you are standing for.
(Your Election Agent will provide you with the relevant forms, explain things and submit the paperwork to the Council’s Returning Officer who runs the election).
