Greens lead on new glass recycling scheme
From January 1st, Cherwell residents will be able to recycle glass jars and bottles by putting them in their blue bin.
As the Cherwell District Council Executive member for Neighbourhood Services, Green Councillor Ian Middleton has been pushing for this change for 18 months and is delighted to finally see it happen!
In contrast to every other council in Oxfordshire, Cherwell District Council has always refused to allow glass jars and bottles to be recycled from home by putting them in the blue bin. Greens made a pledge in 2024 that they would work towards changing that and now we’ve done it!
Ian Middleton put forward plans earlier this year to allow glass to be put into the blue bin along with other recycling. However, due to delays introduced by budget amendments from opposition groups it has only now been possible to launch the service which will start on January 1st.

Glass collected will be separated at local materials recovery facilities to be turned back into bottles and jars as well as being repurposed for other things such as aggregate for road re-surfacing. Most of the current bottle banks will be phased out over the coming months which will also reduce fly-tipping which the banks often attract.
Cllr Middleton said “I had hoped to be able to make this change in the Spring but getting it agreed by the council was much harder work than I expected, especially as it’s one of the things most requested by residents. However, I’m delighted that this new service will finally be available from the beginning of 2026 making good on a pledge I made nearly 2 years ago, proving that when Greens make a promise, we deliver on it.”
